Hello and welcome to today’s blog, which is some tips and tricks I learned experimenting with the stamp set Lasting Lily. This set can be found in the 2019 Sale-A-Bration mini catalog, which you can earn for FREE with a qualifying $100 product purchase. What really caught my attention, are the beautiful sentiments and I thought it would pair wonderfully with the Kindness & Compassion stamp set from the Annual Catalog. Lasting Lily is not only a 2-Step stamp set, but it is also Distinktive. What is Distinktive? It is when the stamp lays down the ink at different opacities giving the finished image more depth. My first (and until now only) Distinktive stamp was Heartfelt Blooms from last year’s SAB catalog. That stamp was a red rubber stamp and Lasting Lily is a photopolymer, which they stamp differently. So, when I sat down to experiment with different colors with Lasting Lily, imagine my surprise when the stamped image looked not quite right…
I pre-cut Whisper White and Very Vanilla cardstock to 4” x 5 ¼” to have plenty on hand, especially for the inside sentiments. This is a great way to experiment with stamps if you are seeing how the final image looks or are trying to figure the best color to use. I thought that Petal Pink or Blushing Bride would be good colors to start with and I did not like the stamped image, wasn’t very Distinktive as the image from the case insert for the set. Fast forward after experimenting with a variety of variables, the bottom line is that if your ink pad has too much ink, you will not get the best stamped image.
What do you mean too much ink and how does that even happen??
It can happen one of two ways: either it comes to you with too much ink or you use your ink refill and apply too much. I’ve had both happen.
How can I “remove” or “take up” this excess ink??
There are three ways that I can suggest:
1. Use the back of a spoon and using a “sweeping motion”, push the ink down on the pad:
2. I use these blue shop towels for cleaning (better than paper towels and leaves little to no residue) and you place this on top of the ink pad and gently press down to absorb some of the excess ink:
3. If you have an ink pad that is really inked up, take a couple pieces of printer paper, fold it in half, and lay that on top of the ink pad and gently press down so the paper can absorb the excess ink:
Repeat any of these steps as necessary. One way to really tell that you have too much ink without even stamping on a piece of cardstock, is the stamp itself. If you see any bubbling on the inked image, then you will not have a clean and precise image that you desire, you can see that in the stamped images above. This is totally my opinion and what I found worked for me, you may find other results. I know that it is suggest that with photopolymer stamps to use a Stampin’ Pierce Mat underneath your cardstock, but I didn’t find any additional help in this case and I also already have a mat that I use under my grid paper for stamping. I hope this helps you, if you too run into the same issues I had. This is a beautiful stamp set and I hope you have fun making lots of wonderful cards!
Here is a quick tutorial for the card that I made with this set:
The card base is Mossy Meadow cardstock, cut at 5 ½” x 8 ½”, and scored at 4 ¼”. I used the embossing thinlit from the Stitched Labels Framelits on the upper left and lower right corners:
The stems and leaf are stamped in Mossy Meadow ink and the lilies are stamped in Mango Melody ink on Whisper White cardstock. This is then cut out with the 3rdlargest Rectangle Stitched Framelit Die, which measures 3 1/8” x 4 ½”. I tied a piece of the Braided Linen Trim into a bow across the bottom and then layered this on a piece of 3 ¼” x 4 5/8” piece of Wood Textures DSP:
This is then adhered to the card base with dimensionals:
