Hello and welcome to today’s card, which features several new products from the 2019-2020 Annual Catalog, including the new Brick & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder! As you may know, Stampin’ Up! has made some changes to their embossing and die cutting line, specifically they are no longer working with Sizzix, but are working with a new supplier. Since the launch of the new annual catalog, SU! has introduced a new embossing folder plate (it’s blue!!) that’s designed to work with the new 3D folders that are thinner than the old dynamic folders. After my card tutorial, I’ll show you what I tried and found out using the new plate versus the standard cutting pads.
This card was actually inspired by the annual catalog for the Butterfly Wishes stamp set on page 18. There is a little bit of fussy cutting involved, but even for someone like me who is not a fan of fussy cutting, this was pretty easy!
I first started with stamping the butterfly twice on Petal Pink cardstock in Petal Pink ink, fussy cut them out of the cardstock, and then on one of the butterflies I trimmed the body and antennae off. The flowers from the stamp set are stamped in So Saffron ink on Very Vanilla cardstock and fussy cut out:
The sentiment is stamped in Gray Granite ink on Very Vanilla cardstock and cut out with the “square” Rectangle Stitched Die, use the smallest Rectangle Stitched Die to cut out of Purple Posy cardstock, cut a 4” x 5 ¼” piece of Gray Granite cardstock and emboss with the Brick & Mortar embossing folder that is inked with the Gray Granite ink pad, adhere a silver Designer Elements to the middle of the flowers, cut a 5” piece of Purple Posy Scalloped Linen Ribbon, fold in half, and wrap some Linen Thread around to tie into a knot (I used a glue dot to keep the ribbon folded over while I tied the thread), I used the 2ndlargest Stitched Nested Label to cut a piece of this design from the Perennial Essence DSP, and I curled the butterfly wings with my bone folder, used the Fine Tip Glue Pen along the bottom edge of the butterfly wing behind the full butterfly (tip of the right side wing down along to the edge of the bottom left wing till just about where it starts to curve) to adhere the two wings together, the cut out image with the body will be on top:
To assemble the card front, adhere the stitched sentiment piece on top of the rectangle cardstock, adhere to the embossed base layer, and then use two glue dots to adhere the ribbon. Adhere the DSP to the embossed base layer, adhere two of the flowers with glue dots and the third with a mini dimensional, and then adhere the butterfly with mini dimensionals:
This completed piece is adhered to a Purple Posy cardstock card base, cut at 5 ½” x 8 ½”, and scored at 4 ¼”:
The inside is a 4” x 5 ¼” piece of Very Vanilla cardstock, the butterflies are stamped in Petal Pink ink and the sentiment with Purple Posy ink using a Stampin’ Write Marker:
Isn’t this a super cute card?? I just love the new Brick & Mortar embossing folder, it has a lot of fun detail, and I wanted to show you that by inking up the embossing folder before I embossed the cardstock!! If you are not sure about the changes to the embossing folders, don’t be! I actually ordered three of the folders in my last order, Brick & Mortar 3D, High Seas 3D, and Beads & Baubles, and they work great! Below is my insight on the Brick & Mortar since it has a lot of little details!
The new 3D Embossing Folder Plate
First let me say that I’ve had my SU! Big Shot for 10 years, so that means I have the old tab style multipurpose platform, I just never really got around to purchasing the new style, so this is what my insight is based on. I tried several different ways to emboss with the new embossing plate and the old standard plates, spritzing with water, and dry embossing. You definitely need to spritz your cardstock with water, it does make a difference! My first attempt with the new embossing plate, the platform on Tab 1, and spritzed:
Not a lot of detail, so my next attempt was with Tab 2 (both tabs closed), the standard cutting pad, and spritzed:
Much better! However, it was almost “forcing” the folder thru the Big Shot and I know that continual use like that will warp the embossing folder and put stress on the Big Shot. I tried one more time with the embossing plate on Tab 1:
Looks so much better! The difference this time is that I ran it thru the Big Shot 3 times, yes, 3 times! I ran it forth, back, and forth and yes, you should always put the spine first, which I did, but I just didn’t take it out. Kind of like when you have detailed thinlit die and you have to run it thru a couple of times to get a good and complete cut?
So bottom line is, get the new embossing plate, if the embossing folder has detail (like Brick & Mortar), just run it thru a couple more times, and make sure you spritz with water!!
