Hello and welcome to today’s card, which is a warm and tropical birthday card featuring the Tropical Oasis Suite! My Saddle Brown Stazon Ink pad arrived from backorder a couple weeks ago and it was time experiment with it! Not only that, but I really wanted to work on my coloring of the flowers from this stamp set. I really like the stamped image in the Saddle Brown ink, it doesn’t feel as harsh as using Memento or Early Espresso inks, and there was no “bleeding” considering I used a Blender Pen, Stampin’ Blends, and Wink of Stella. I also played around with different coloring tools, Blends, Sponging, and Markers, but ultimately, I really liked using the Watercolor Pencils and a Blender Pen for coloring and then used the Light Petal Pink Stampin’ Blends to “fill in” the petals.
The base layer is Crumb Cake cardstock, cut at 4” x 5 ¼”, and is embossed with the Coastal Weave 3D Embossing Folder. I then took the Saddle Brown ink pad and “dragged” it across the embossed side, horizontally and vertically, to give the embossed cardstock some depth:
For the front of the card, you will need:
1. This design from the Tropical Oasis DSP, cut at 4” x 4”.
2. Two strips of the Braided Burlap Trim, each cut at 4”.
3. Stamp the sentiment in Early Espresso ink on a ¾” strip of Very Vanilla cardstock and trim down.
4. Stamp the palm trees in Saddle Brown ink on Very Vanilla cardstock and cut out with the coordinating dies. Use the Old Olive watercolor pencil to color in the leaves, the Early Espresso watercolor pencil (very lightly) to color the tree trunk, and use a Blender Pen to blend, or soften, the leaves and tree trunk. I created the “coconuts” by coloring the 3mm Pearl Basic Jewels with the Dark Soft Suede Stampin’ Blends.
5. Stamp the hibiscus flower in Saddle Brown ink on Very Vanilla cardstock and cut out with the coordinating die. Color the stamen with Dark Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Blends and color the middle of the flower, the shaded areas on the petals, and around the edge of the petals with a Calypso Coral watercolor pencil. I very lightly used the Real Red watercolor pencil for definition around the flower center, used a Blender Pen to blend the watercolor areas, used Light Petal Pink Stampin’ Blends to fill in the petals, and then went over the whole flower with Wink of Stella.
6. For the two smaller flowers, I did the same thing as above, but I used a little bit more Real Red watercolor pencil in the shaded center areas, and colored a 3mm Pearl Basic Jewel with Dark Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Blends for the center of the flowers.
I first adhered the DSP to the embossed base layer with Multipurpose Glue and then adhered the two strips of Braided Burlap Trim with Tear & Tape Adhesive:
The hibiscus and one of the smaller flowers are adhered to the DSP and the other small flower is adhered with a dimensional. For the palm tree, I placed dimensionals behind the leaves and then a little bit of adhesive to the bottom of the tree trunks, so they will stick to the braided trim. Then I decided that the sentiment would be adhered to the DSP, in the upper right corner:
This completed piece is then adhered to an Early Espresso cardstock card base, cut at 5 ½” x 8 ½”, and scored at 4 ¼”:
For the inside, cut a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock at 4” x 5 ¼”, stamp the sentiment in Early Espresso ink, and then use the pineapple stamp to stamp just the top along the bottom in Old Olive ink, filling in the leaves with the Old Olive watercolor pencil and the Blender Pen:
Isn’t this a super cool card?? This is a fun way to get out those watercolor pencils that have been sitting around just collecting dust! Lol I will admit that I completely forgot about coloring with them and a Blender Pen versus an Aqua Painter, so maybe now I won’t be so intimidated by trying to figure out how to color the flowers without making them look like a blob!!
