Hello and welcome to today’s card, which is a special Birthday Card in a Box that I made for my younger son’s birthday! He only had two requests for his birthday: 1) I make him a super cool card and 2) send him some baked goodies (he is currently stationed in Hawaii). I thought making him a Card in a Box would be perfect! I’ve made these in the past, however, I always struggled with the inside of the box and adhering the pieces straight and I thought someone out there in the crafting universe had to have come up with a template for the inside that is one piece and not 3. So off to Pinterest I went searching and luckily did not have to go far, thanks to Deb Valder (stampladee.com) who created a super easy template that I CASE’d and are sharing with you today!
The box base for this card is Basic Black cardstock, cut at 5 ½” x 8 ½”, and you will score at 2 ¾” on the 5 ½” side of the cardstock. Turn the cardstock to the 8 ½” side and at 2”, 4”, 6”, and 8” you will use your Stampin’ Trimmer to score to the middle score line and then cut the rest of the way down. This will give you a ½” piece which you will create the flap for the card, trimming part of the cardstock off:
The insert for the box is a piece of Basic Black cardstock, cut at 2 ¾” x 8” and scored at ½”, 2 ½”, 3”, 5”, 5 ½”, and 7 ½” (I used my Simply Scored Scoring Tool). You will then fold the cardstock into a “Z”:
For your layering pieces, you are going to need one piece for the back of the box (sentiment) cut at 1 7/8” x 5 3/8” and if you are going to have a two piece layer, then the second piece is 1 ¾” x 5 ¼”. For the small panels, you will need 10 pieces of each: cardstock 1 7/8” x 2 5/8” and DSP 1 ¾” x 2 ½” for all 10 panels:
For the balloons, I used the Balloon Bouquet Punch to cut out Lemon Lime Twist cardstock, Basic Black cardstock, Gold Foil Sheet, and Gold Glimmer Paper, punching each color twice. I used Black and Whisper White Baker’s Twine for the balloon string, tying it around the front of the balloon and then securing it to the back with a glue dot, a ¾” piece of Window Sheet is adhered with a glue dot and then the second balloon piece is also adhered with glue dots. This will give you 4 large and 4 small balloons for the box:
The numbers are cut out of Gold Glimmer Paper using the Large Numbers Framelits (retired) and the spirals I created from Gold Foil, Gold Glimmer, and Lemon Lime Twist cardstock with the 1 ¾” punch, cutting around (like a spiral) with scissors:
I used Tear & Tape Adhesive for the inside card flap (you want to use a strong adhesive for this) and then folded over to make the box:
I then adhered all of the panels to the box:
For the insert you will need to use strong adhesive on the “mountain” part of the cardstock on each side (I ran out of Tear & Tape and used Sticky Strip-yes, I still have some left! Lol). Put the insert into the middle, with the ½” ends towards a front and back corner, and then “fold” the box over so the two middle pieces will adhere and will fold over when you put it in an envelope:
For the decorating part, I used glue dots secure the balloons, stars (retired punch), and spirals. I punched out some more stars, adhered those to the inside flaps, and the sentiment from the Number of Years stamp set (retired) is heat embossed in Gold Embossing Powder on Whisper White cardstock:
I do apologize for using some retired items that you may not have, however, since I used the Broadway Bound Specialty Paper for this, you could substitute other items from the Broadway Bound Suite!
